I grew up attending the Chilmark United Methodist Church on Martha’s Vineyard. Several years ago I started attending the Charlton City United Methodist Church with my husband Roland. I had my membership transferred here in 2007. I have also attended the Women’s Bible Study group for three or four years. That is where I started to feel the need to know more about God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit; and my relationship with them.
Last winter Jean had brought up the idea of the One to One Discipleship study to us at a bible study meeting. I started to think about it more and more. I almost signed up a couple of times. One day Jean called me and asked if I would be interested. I told her that I was considering it, but one of my biggest concerns was that I did not want to get up in church and give my testimony. She said, “don’t worry about that right now. Let’s just see how things go.” I decided to do it anyway. We figured we would get together once a week for 9 weeks, for about one to two hours max. Considering Bible Study went about two hours – and there were 10 to 12 of us, it was doable.
When we first got together, Jean brought me my first lesson, and went over the study. She told me that Katalina would be joining us. I was thrilled. I didn’t realize it then, that the three of us would have such a close and spiritual bond by the end of our journey. When we first started it was a little intimidating, but I was learning a lot about my relationship with God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. I was also enjoying it so much I had to keep my eyes on the time, because I wanted to keep going. Soon our two hour meetings turned into four hour meetings. We had so much to share and learn from each other. After our meeting I would go home to start on our next lesson. I was and still am eager to know more. Memorizing was and still is my biggest challenge. The older you are the harder it is, and some scriptures didn’t seem to relate to me or my life, but some did like John 3:16 “God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him, shall not perish but have eternal life.”
During my second week of our lessons, I was struggling with something while I was memorizing this verse. This verse turned into a prayer in my dreams and kept repeating into the morning. By noon of that day, what I was struggling with became a blessing which brought peace and joy to my heart.
After we finished our 9 week One to One Discipleship study, Roland and I had company. We were kept very busy for a couple of days. By the third night I woke up feeling awful and feeling unbalanced. I realized that I had been so busy I hadn’t read the Bible or prayed in two days. So I started thinking about our memory verses and Psalm 119:11 “I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you”, came to my mind. Now I say it every day as a promise to God to start my day by reading the Bible, praying continuously, meditating on what I have read and memorizing a scripture verse.
I am glad I took the One to One Discipleship study. It has made me stronger spiritually and I now know I am a Child of God and a Christian.
